Reflecting upon Loving Him Above All Else
Holy Spirit is sounding a cry in the body of Christ. He is calling to
order, placing in rank and position God’s voluntary warriors. Deep
calling to deep . . . His voice sounding in all the earth, calling forth
those who cleave to the Lord with a fierceness born out of their passionate
love for Him.
The eyes of the Lord are searching, searching the hearts of His people.
He is looking for those desiring Him – having completely abandoned
any other motivation than that of knowing the King and making Him known.
Psalm 11:4-5 says: The Lord is in his holy temple;
the Lord is on his heavenly throne. He observes the sons of men; his eyes
examine them. The Lord examines the righteous. Those who do His
will, not out of mandatory obedience, but out of voluntary love, arrest
his gaze. The Lord is drawn to those who pant after Him and treasure His
Words more than their daily bread (Ps. 42:1; Job 23:12).
The war-horse riders who advance the Kingdom of God, exacting the deliverance
of Luke 4:18-19 are those who are chosen and mounted by the Lord of Hosts.
Their eagerness to conquer is fueled by the consuming zeal of voluntary
love for the King. Only those who have fallen in
love with the Lord can abandon themselves to Him without reservation,
qualification, or self-serving motivation, responding to His commands
without thought of self-preservation or reputation. These kings, priests
and deliverers are those for whom He searches and only they will satisfy
the searching eyes of the Lord of Hosts.
What am I saying with this imagery? Those who walk in the power and authority
of the King, being a balanced witness in word and deed, will be those
with the singular focus and motivation expressed in Isaiah 26:8:
Yes, Lord, walking in the way of your laws, we wait for you; your name
and renown are the desire of our hearts. The day is approaching
and is even now upon us when access to the favor and face of the King
for ministry engagement will be contingent upon having a heart of pure,
undefiled, true devotion to God – a heart devoid of all other lovers
but Him.
How can we know if we truly love God above all else? Consider these:
- Being equally delighted to do God’s will from
the back stage of obscurity as in the lime light of center stage
- Hearing God whisper, “this is the way; walk
in it,” and walking in His revealed way means more than having
man’s approval
- Valuing His servant’s towel in our hand more
than the finest jesture offered
by our peers
- When simply loving the Lord is sufficient in and
of itself, separate and apart from everything else.
- Being willing to decrease so that He can increase
in us and through us
- Seeking the audience of One and finding Him brings
the deepest satisfaction and contentment
It is vitally important that we allow Holy Spirit to lay bare the recesses
of our hearts so that we may know what lies within. Honestly examining
our thoughts, attitudes, motives, and behavior will help us know if Jesus
alone is our one desire and loving Him above all else is our consuming
passion.
