River Watch
The Heart-Cry for Prayer

Jesus admonished His disciples to watch and pray (Matthew 26:41). Knowing the power of prayer to secure the victory, He longed for their prayers to be mixed with His as He prepared to face the fulfillment of His earthly purpose – becoming the sacrificial lamb for the sins of the whole world.

The Apostle Paul frequently urged the recipients of his letters to pray for him as a messenger of the gospel. In Ephesians 6:18-20, Paul requested they pray for him that he would speak the mystery of the gospel with boldness, with power, fluency, direction and courage. In Colossians 4:3-4, Paul asked the people to pray that a door of utterance be opened to speak the mystery of Christ the way he should speak it. In 2 Thessalonians 3:1-2, Paul requested prayer that the word of the Lord would have fee course and be glorified. Hindrances were in the way and had to be removed in order for the Word to go forth unhindered and be glorified in the lives to whom it was being delivered.
Paul recognized how very important the prayers of God’s people were to his being able to accomplish his spiritual assignments. He needed God to answer their prayers so the message of the Good News would spread.

E. M. Bounds states in E. M. Bounds on Prayer, page 464:

Summing it all up, we find that Paul felt the success of the Word, its liberty, and largeness, were bound up in prayers, and he found that failure to pray would restrict the Word’s influence and glory. His deliverance from unreasonable and wicked men, as well as his safety, depended on people’s prayers and God’s answers. These prayers, while they greatly helped him preach, at the same time protected him from the cruel plans of wicked and unreasonable men.

The River Watch

Recognizing the critical need for prayers of intercession to the success of any endeavor, Rising River Ministries has established The River Watch. In Scripture, watch is used in three senses:

1) To watch in order to guard
2) To watch meaning to look for
3) A watch in the night
